Non-Violence

Yesterday at a meeting of Methodists, there was a Mennonite guy who reflected with us on a variety of issues post-election including violence and resistance. He said one thing that has been rattling around in my head since yesterday:
“The opposite of violence isn’t non-violence; the opposite of violence is hospitality.”
I thought that was a profound insight for what we all need moving forward – lots of coffee! (and conversation). I remember Shane Claiborne once saying that the problem isn’t that rich people don’t care about poor people; it’s that too often rich people don’t know any poor people.
It might just be that simple.
